Our Cultural Crochet Masterclass offers a diverse array of techniques, including Japanese Amigurumi, Irish Lace, Afghan Squares, Red Rock Canyon Tapestry, Moroccan, and Wayuu Tribal bags. Each technique showcases unique color combinations that encapsulate distinct cultural elements. 

These masterclasses provide hands-on, immersive experiences in traditional crochet methods from around the globe. Participants will develop intricate skills and gain an appreciation for the cultural heritage behind each technique, fostering a sense of community and shared learning. Each masterclass lasts 3.5 hours and includes a short break with culturally related refreshments.  This project is supported in part by the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

FEE $50 Individual Class - Baby Jellyfish Amigurumi

You'll receive 1 class with individual in-person instruction with our volunteer, materials and a Baby Jellyfish pattern. This class lasts 120 minutes.  

FEE $160 Individual Class - Fox or Bunny or Bear Amigurumi

You'll receive 4 classes with individual in-person instruction with our volunteer, materials and your choice of amigurumi pattern. Each class lasts 120 minutes.

You'll receive 1 class with individual in-person instruction. Typically booked as a refresher class on how to crochet or if you're having pattern issues, blocking concerns, custom fitting or if you're stuck. The class lasts 90 minutes.

The Art Of Crochet Project

The Art Of Crochet Project uses an art-based approach, crocheting, to help enhance learning, alleviate stress and pain, strengthen mental acuity and focus and assist one on their journey to empowerment. Our focus encompasses from young people to seniors. 

Young people engage with math concepts by designing their own crocheted projects, thus blending the art of crochet with traditional STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) focused challenges. The STEAM approach to education fosters creativity and divergent thinking alongside fundamental disciplines. It motivates and inspires young people to generate new technologies and ideas. With a focus on practice and innovation, students get to learn from inquiry-based assignments. 

Seniors have a different set of interest, such as, maintaining mental acuity and focus, coping with pain and experiencing feeling good. Some studies show that counting stitches and following a pattern while crocheting engages both hemispheres of the brain, thus releasing neurotransmitters into the body. Two of the neurotransmitters are serotonin and dopamine, thus one "feels good" and has a higher threshold for pain, thus coping better with pain. This is of interest for those having chemo and experiencing chronic pain. Following pattern strengthens mental acuity and focus which is a factor of interest for those experiencing the onset of dementia. Finally, crocheting is a form of relaxation and relieves stress. Completing a project boots self-esteem and confidence.
